ALICE NYE REACHES
STARDOM EARLY IN TENPIN CAREER |
| |
The story of "Alice in Wonderland" has been
rewritten - this time with a bowling ball.
Memphis' own Alice Nye etched the latest version
with a rolling ball and 1,763 bowling pins in
the 50th anniversary of the Women's
International Bowling Congress tournament in
Rochester, NY on May 2, 1967.
A late entry, Mrs. Nye had debated the
possibility of making the trip until two days
before she departed for Rochester. Alice
rolled her way onto the Congress' all-amateur
entry in this year's world tournament of bowlers
in Malmo, Sweden, an all-expenses paid trip that
truly will last forever in the memory of this 28
year old housewife.
Mrs. Nye, bowling out of
National Lanes (now All Star Lanes) and carrying
a 190 average - the highest in the city, had no clue
as to what was about to happen in her young
bowling career.
Scoring 592 in Team play and 548 in Doubles
along with 623 in Singles placed Alice in
contention to be one of six bowlers to be
selected for the honor of representing the USA
in Sweden.
So impressive was the performance of this
Memphis bowler, both on the lanes and elsewhere
- she had won the Tennessee Match Game
Championship in 1965 and finished second at the
BPAA all-star in Michigan - that she was
notified of her selection to the USA Team and
was told to meet
her WIBC teammates, along with
the ABC team, in New York, June 25, 1967.
Back in Memphis news of her success and
selection to the WIBC team spread like wildfire.
Although the trip is an "all-expense-paid" deal
there are many "incidental" expenses to be paid.
Several events were staged to generate funds to
aid her.
Responding was Poplar Plaza Majors League with
$53, Old Crow (sponsor of the Old Crow women's
team) $100, Southern Lanes' Cherokee League with
$37, MLGW League - $10, Southern Lanes anted-up
$25, Northgate Park Sweeper, $11; Memphis
Bowling Association donated $50, and Memphis
Bowling Proprietors Association - $50.
In addition Pepsi Cola, the sponsor of Nye's
WIBC team, provided luggage. There were
numerous gifts from the Alice Nye tournament at
Park Lanes and from Memphis Women's Bowling
Association and individuals.
Ms. Nye
received a proclamation from Mayor Ingram
naming her Memphis' "Goodwill Ambassador".
