Why would we put ourselves
through this?
Confused? Well, don't be.
What I am referring to is the decision by the Memphis
Area USBC Association to host the 2011 Tennessee State Open
Championship and the Southern Bowling Congress tournaments
all in the same year; actually, only a few weeks apart from
each other.
By agreeing to host these two large
tournaments, your association board will, literally, be
working themselves to exhaustion.
The Tennessee State
Open Championship consists of four weekends as does the
Southern Bowling Congress tournament. That's eight
weekends with only a minor break between them. In some
cases, the time required to work during these tournaments is
from "can to can't". Preparation starts in 2010 and
continues even after the tournaments end.
So, why
would we put ourselves through this? |
- Historical precedence:
Memphis has always been involved with, and a strong
supporter of, the State and Southern. We were due
to host the State Open Championship as a matter of
rotation. So, the State tournament was a given.
However, the problem was with the 2011 Southern
tournament.
When we found out that those cities
that were planning on bidding for the 2011 Southern were
withdrawing their bid for various reasons and that other
cities that were approached could not host it due to the
short timeframe involved, Memphis stepped up and filled
the void by agreeing to offer our great city as the 2011
host site.

- For our bowlers:
We know that a lot of our bowlers do not participate in
the State or Southern tournaments. By agreeing to
host them, we would bring those tournaments here, to our
membership, and thus allow them the opportunity to
participate without having the time and expense of
travel. In the past, when we hosted these
tournaments, our membership has been very supportive and
your participation gives us ample reason to continue our
involvement with these tournaments.

- Monetary gain:
One of our responsibilities, as officers in your
association, is to maintain a viable financial
condition. We stand to gain considerable income
from our labors during these tournaments. That income
is returned to you, our membership, in many forms:
Local awards: We
offer local awards that are above and beyond those
offered by the USBC There is no cost to you for
these awards. It is our way of recognizing and
rewarding achievements that would otherwise not be
recognized under the USBC awards program.
Awards Banquet: One of
our most popular events is our annual Awards Banquet.
This is a catered event where we recognize those bowlers
who have rolled honor scores. We also induct our
new Life Members and Hall of Fame members. This
banquet does not cost any participant anything. It
is our way of celebrating another year of
accomplishments with our membership.

- We care:
Your
association officers and directors work hard to provide
you, our membership, with the very best service
possible. We are volunteers and therefore receive
no financial gain from our labors on your behalf.
In fact, when we attend State or Southern meetings to
represent you, we do so at our own expense.
I
mentioned "exhaustion" earlier. Until you have
worked each weekend of these large tournaments, you have
no idea how exhausting they can be. But the work
does not only occur on the weekends; all week long
there are duties that have to be performed. From
record keeping, to supplies to organizational meetings
and on and on. Some days we start at 5:00am and
don't finish until after midnight and then do it all
again the next day. All for no pay. Our
reward is your participation, support, and fulfilling our
sworn obligation to serve our membership.
|
Your association has been under attack by some elements
of our membership. Those people would have you believe
that we, your board, have no concern for you and that we do
nothing for you and return nothing to you. Their
objectives are purely personal and do not further the intent
or mission of this fine organization.
My desire in
this essay, is to enlighten you as to what your board really
does for you.
Do you have the desire to be part of
this outstanding association of dedicated volunteers? If
you do, get involved in a constructive manner by offering
moral support to
your association or by offering yourself as a candidate for election
to the board.
Trust me, we would be happy to
have all the help and support we can find. 2011 will
be an exhausting year but it will be very rewarding for you,
our membership.
Jim Hammons - Director
PS:
We have been approached by the Ladies East Coast Classic to
assist them with their tournament in 2011. This would
not be an official MAUSBC event, but would generate even
more funds for our membership. Your board has agreed
to help them if they decide to come to Memphis. So,
once more 2011 will be an even bigger and challenging year. |
